Visiting New Covenant?
We're glad you're here
If you are planning to visit New Covenant Presbyterian Church, we welcome you. We realize it’s not easy visiting a church for the first time, and you may have questions like these: Will I feel welcomed? Will I know what to do? Will they ask me for money? Will my kids like it? How should I dress? Can I come if I don’t believe or have never been to church?
Please know that you are welcomed at New Covenant, whatever your background. You will find people to be friendly and inviting, with no dress code or obligation. We hope you will see that our worship and time together is based on a common bond in Jesus Christ, and that you will be drawn to him as the giver of life.
Worship at New Covenant
The tone of our worship is reverent joy: “reverent” because we dare come before the God of the universe; “joyful” because he graciously welcomes us through Jesus Christ. We do not wish to dishonor God’s majesty by being irreverent or flippant, or to dishonor God’s grace by being overly somber or self-conscious.
The Gospel (which means “good news”) is therefore at the heart of our experience on Sunday mornings. Our message and music, for example, center on the joy of new life in Jesus Christ. We seek to help visitors understand how to receive this gift of new life, through faith in Jesus. We seek to avoid a merely moralistic message, with an “us versus them” feel. As we proclaim the Gospel and its implications to all areas of life, we hope it has a “Him on behalf of us” feel.
Priorities. Some of our priorities in worship which you may notice: - Scripture is a high priority. We read frequently from the Bible and teach it carefully, believing this to be the very truth of God given to order our faith and lives. - Prayer is fundamental to worship. Just as God speaks to us through the word (as we read it and preach it), we speak to God in prayer. During the worship service we pray concerning needs in our church and community, and also needs around the world. - Music is a gift from God that allows us to express praise and prayer in beautiful ways. Christians enjoy singing, and the Bible encourages us to “sing a new song to the Lord!” We sing throughout the church service, especially in the opening portion. We print the words to songs in the bulletin, on the screens, and we use hymnals as well. If a song is new to you, you are welcome to simply listen. - The sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper are enjoyed on select Sundays during the worship service. The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of each month, unless otherwise noted, and becomes the focal point of that worship service. - Friendship. Before, during, and after the worship service we seek an inviting atmosphere, and provide opportunities for conversation and for meeting new people.
What about children and families?
Our congregation is committed to a safe and secure nursery for very young children, even as we seek to help parents move their children toward full involvement in the worship service. We will gladly escort you to the nursery when you arrive, or you may keep your infant in the service and use the nursing mother's room as necessary.
Children ages 4-6 can participate in "children's worship" which begins prior to the sermon; this trains children in the basic elements of worship. There is also a brief children’s sermon the final Sunday of each month. For teens, there is opportunity to be involved in music, greeting, and other aspects of morning worship.
Sunday School classes are offered for all ages (children, teens, and adults) after the church service (11 till Noon). There are also activities on Sunday evenings, Wednesdays, and other occasions, as well as missions trips and other ministry opportunities for the entire family.
Family is important to God and to our worship. We would be happy to speak to you personally about the many ways your family grow and become more involved at New Covenant.
A word about worship “style.”
God does not command a particular worship style, although matters of style have become very important in recent decades. God has much to say about worship, however, and our service endeavors to honor the instruction he has given. That being said, New Covenant would be considered a “blended” worship service, utilizing newer and older songs. We have respect for church history as well as more recent expressions of Christian music and poetry.
The pastors and elders are available to further discuss the biblical reasoning behind decisions that have been made concerning the tone, priorities, and specifics of worship.
